Bitumen analysis by FTIR spectrometry: testing and analysis protocol – BRRC Method of Measurement ME 85/13

This publication describes a standardization protocol for the interpretation of FTIR spectra of dissolved bitumens. The objective is to determine various indicators (e.g. of ageing or the presence of polymers such as SBS or EVA) from absorbance values measured on FTIR spectra, through a semi-quantitative comparison of the intensities or surface areas of peaks within the normalization range.

After briefly recalling the principle of infrared spectrometry, this procedure describes:

  1. The method for taking spectra.
  2. The method for standardizing spectra.
  3. The measurement of the indicators of ageing and the presence of polymers (SBS, EVA).
