Tests for bitumens and asphalt mixtures

To advance the quality of asphalt and to design durable asphalt mixtures, it is necessary to have good test methods for the evaluation of bitumen and asphalt properties both in the laboratory and on site. The link between the test results and long-term performance is of major importance in this respect. Moreover, uniformity in the test methods is pursued at the European level.

BRRC has several tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of bitumens and asphalt mixtures, both in the laboratory and on site. These tests are used both in giving assistance to third parties and in carrying out research (see List of tests for bitumens and asphalt mixtures).

Furthermore, BRRC cooperates in the development and improvement of performance tests for bitumens and asphalt mixtures:

  • on the one hand, new test methods are in preparation:
    • for bituminous mixtures: among other things bond strength between layers, susceptibility to fretting, the ageing of bituminous mixtures, objective colour determination, colour durability, the adhesion of emulsions);
    • for mastic asphalt: among other things the workability test and shrinkage test;
  • on the other hand, it is investigated what improvements and adaptations to existing test methods are prompted by new developments in the asphalt branch (such as thin and ultra-thin surface courses, couloured asphalt, asphalt production at reduced temperatures, the recycling of mixtures prepared with polymer-modified bitumen, etc.).

Proposals for new EN standards or improvements to existing standards are regularly made to the competent CEN working groups TC227/WG1 and TC336/WG1.
