To help designers (or decision-makers) with the choice of pavement type, a working group of experts (engineering consultants, contractors, public authorities and researchers) in the fields concerned has compiled a code of good practice for the choice of asphalt pavement type in road design and maintenance (BRRC publication R78/06).

Part A of the code describes the structure of a road and the roles and characteristics of the various constituent parts, while focussing on asphalt pavements.

Part B describes the making of a design:

  • the various stages involved in design-making;
  • the various techniques and types of maintenance;
  • condition survey of existing roads;
  • structural design issues.

Part C is entirely devoted to:

  • a well-advised choice of pavement type depending on intrinsic characteristics and other relevant factors listed in the description of the field of application;
  • the choice of binder, additives (if any) and aggregates.

Synoptic tables and product sheets for each type of asphalt pavement are provided as valuable tools for designers in making their choices.
